Mumbai, July 6, 2025:
Entrepreneur Sushil Kedia issued a public clarification on Saturday following a controversy sparked by his social media post about the Marathi language, which led to workers of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) allegedly vandalising his Mumbai office.
The controversy erupted after Kedia tweeted on Friday, tagging MNS chief Raj Thackeray, and wrote:
“I don’t know Marathi properly even after living for 30 years in Mumbai & with your gross misconduct I have made it a resolve that until such people as you are allowed to pretend to be taking care of Marathi Manus I take pratigya I won’t learn Marathi. Kya karna hai bol?”
The provocative remark did not sit well with MNS supporters, who are known for their vocal defense of Marathi language and identity. Soon after, reports surfaced of MNS workers vandalising Kedia’s office in retaliation.
A day later, Kedia retracted his statement, explaining that the tweet was made “in a wrong state of mind” and under emotional stress.
“I overreacted. I must withdraw,” he said in his clarification, adding that the original tweet was being “manipulated and misinterpreted.”
He expressed regret over the post and clarified that his intention was not to disrespect the Marathi language or its speakers.
“When there is an atmosphere of fear, hesitation develops, and reactions can be blown out of proportion,” he said.
Kedia also expressed respect and gratitude for Raj Thackeray, saying he hoped people would be encouraged rather than intimidated into learning Marathi.
The incident once again highlighted the sensitive linguistic and cultural dynamics in Maharashtra. The MNS, known for its fierce promotion of Marathi identity, has frequently taken a strong stance on language-related issues, often leading to clashes with non-Marathi speaking communities.
