Durgapur, July 6:
Buzz around Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s possible visit to Durgapur intensified today after senior BJP leaders conducted a sudden site inspection and held a closed-door meeting in the city. Party insiders suggest the PM might address a public rally ahead of the Trinamool Congress’s scheduled 21 July mega rally in Kolkata.
Sources indicate the Prime Minister may visit West Bengal on 18 July, though no official confirmation has been issued.
A high-powered BJP delegation — including national leaders Satish Chandra Dhund and Jagannath Chatterjee, along with Durgapur West MLA Lakshman Ghorui, Bankura district president Prasenjit Chatterjee, and Burdwan organisational president Abhijit Ta — visited the Nehru Stadium in Durgapur this afternoon. The stadium is reportedly being considered as the venue for a major BJP event.
Following the inspection, top functionaries gathered at the BJP office on Vidyasagar Avenue for a strategic meeting. The agenda reportedly focused on organizational plans and preparations for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
Speaking to the press, BJP state general secretary Jagannath Chatterjee stated,
“A mega event is being planned in Durgapur. The venue was inspected today, and the matter was discussed during our meeting.”
When asked whether Prime Minister Modi would be attending the event, Chatterjee said,
“The Prime Minister is free to visit any part of the country and attend any political programme. But as of now, nothing is officially confirmed.”
The visit gains political significance with the recent appointment of a new BJP state president and the party’s increased focus on regaining momentum in West Bengal, where it hopes to challenge the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress in the upcoming Assembly polls.
Leaders from the BJP Yuva Morcha, as well as several district and state-level functionaries, were also present at the high-level meet.
Though party leaders remained tight-lipped, the groundwork laid today suggests something major is on the horizon in Bengal’s political calendar — possibly led by none other than the Prime Minister himself.
