The Maharashtra Cabinet on Friday approved an ambitious ₹1,200 crore rural road development plan to boost connectivity across 25 districts in the state. The initiative, part of the government’s long-term infrastructure strategy, is expected to improve access to markets, healthcare, and education in remote and semi-urban areas.
Scope of the Project
The plan involves the construction and upgrading of over 3,000 kilometers of rural roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and state-funded schemes. Priority will be given to villages with poor road access, especially those dependent on agriculture and small-scale industries.
- Upgradation of existing single-lane roads to all-weather roads.
- Construction of new road links to unconnected villages.
- Use of durable, climate-resilient materials to withstand monsoon damage.
- Integration with state transport and logistics networks.
Government’s Statement
Public Works Minister Ajit Pawar said the plan is a “transformative step” for rural Maharashtra. “Improved roads will mean better access to essential services, reduced travel times, and new opportunities for farmers and small businesses. We aim to complete the first phase within two years,” Pawar said.
Funding and Implementation
The ₹1,200 crore budget will be sourced from a mix of state government funds and central assistance. Implementation will be carried out in partnership with local bodies, ensuring community involvement in the planning and monitoring process.
Expected Benefits
Experts believe the improved road network will enhance rural trade, tourism, and agricultural supply chains. The plan is also expected to create thousands of temporary and permanent jobs during the construction and maintenance phases.
