New Delhi | July 9
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has voiced serious concerns over Delhi’s deteriorating air quality, stating that he avoids staying in the capital for long due to the health hazards posed by its toxic environment.

Speaking at a public function, Gadkari remarked,

“When I arrive in Delhi, I start thinking about when I will leave. I book my return tickets before I even arrive.”
He urged citizens and authorities alike to take the pollution issue seriously, describing it as a “life-threatening” crisis.

Delhi’s Air Pollution: A Persistent Health Emergency

Gadkari noted that he limits his stay in the city to just 2 to 3 days, citing the severe health risks associated with Delhi’s air. He warned that pollution is directly reducing the life expectancy of its residents.

Transport Sector: The Key Contributor

Blaming vehicle emissions for nearly 40% of the city’s pollution, Gadkari pushed for a rapid transition to clean fuels such as:

  • Ethanol
  • Methanol
  • Green Hydrogen

He emphasized that these fuels are essential for long-term sustainability.

Government Measures and Green Initiatives

Gadkari listed several ongoing initiatives by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways:

  • Use of 80 lakh tonnes of waste in road construction
  • Rainwater harvesting systems along highways
  • Plantation of 67 lakh trees by NHAI (2024–25)
  • Creation of green corridors, including bamboo plantations and vertical gardens

These are aimed at reducing environmental impact and improving air quality.

Pollution Still a Daily Struggl

Despite government efforts, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) continues to hover in the ‘severe’ category, especially during winter months. Gadkari’s personal testimony has resonated with Delhi residents, many of whom experience respiratory issues and health complications due to poor air quality.

Experts Weigh In

Environmentalists and public health professionals have supported Gadkari’s observations, calling for:

  • Stricter vehicle emission norms
  • Improved public transport
  • Solid waste management reforms
  • Massive afforestation efforts
